The Waldorf Astoria sold for $1.95 billion

Hilton Worldwide is selling its famously called “the greatest of them all”, the Waldorf Astoria hotel, to Chinese insurance company Anbang Insurance Group Co. for $1.95 billion. This definitely put the Waldorf Astoria on a list of most expensive hotel ever sold in the U.S.

The Waldorf Astoria New York, on Park Avenue in Manhattan opened in 1931. At the time it was the tallest and largest hotel in the world. As part of the deal, Hilton will continue to operate the property for 100 years and the hotel will undergo a major renovation. The iconic hotel was featured in a 1945 film staring Ginger Rogers called “Week-end at the Waldorf,” and it features the most elite New York’s restaurants such as Peacock Alley, Bull and Bear Prime Steakhouse and Oscar’s. Its $1,000-per-week Suite 2728 was home to Marilyn Monroe in 1955 after she left behind her troubled life in Hollywood.

“This relationship represents a unique opportunity for our organizations to work together to finally maximize the full value of this iconic asset on a full city block in Midtown Manhattan,” said Christopher J. Nassetta, president and chief executive of Hilton Worldwide.

Designed by Henry Janeway Hardenbergh, the first 13-story Waldorf Hotel was opened on March 1893 at the corner of Fifth Avenue and 33rd Street, on the site where millionaire developer William Waldorf Astor had his mansion.

Historic Villa Maria Estate in Water Mill

Historic Villa Maria Estate in Water Mill

Villa Maria in Water Mill, New York was built as a private residence in 1887. This magnificent waterfront estate has glorious views of Mecox Bay. The present owners purchased this spectacular property in 2005 and began a 6-year project to restore the home into a splendid 21st century estate.

Frank Freeman transformed the house-it doubled in size, and acquired a large living wing, two story staircase in a grand entrance hall, and added leafy stone capitals copied from an ancient Greek clock tower and a ballroom crowned by deep coffers. The property is listed for sale and the asking price is $69 million. The residence is offered on 11 acres with a waterside pool, pool cabana, tennis court and a wonderful two-bedroom guesthouse.

The residence has been expanded to 22,000 square feet, with 11 bedrooms- including a glorious 6-room master suite, with a custom marble tub in the master bathroom. Villa Maria also features a handmade stone and wrought iron staircase and a stunning 60 foot living room with original fresco details.

“The idea was restrained elegance—to modernize the house completely but without touch screens everywhere,” says the architect Andre Tchelistcheff, who has worked for four years on the restoration of this beautiful estate. There is also a large stone terrace overlooking the wide lawn and bay.

Montblanc Metamorphosis II

Montblanc Metamorphosis II

Montblanc is a German manufacturer of writing instruments, watches, jewellery and leather goods, founded by the stationer Claus-Johannes Voss, the banker Alfred Nehemias and the engineer August Eberstein in 1906. The rich history of outstanding products stands behind this well-known company. Recently the Montblanc has presented a new version of its famed two-faced timekeeper named Metamorphosis.

Originally launched in 2010 as the first of the Timewriter Metamorphosis, it was the world’s first wrist watch that comprised overlaid dials, which open majestically like a theatre curtain. The Metamorphosis II took four years to develop, and now here it is finally as a limited edition of 18 pieces in 18K red gold. One face of the watch shows the time and date while the other acts as a chronograph. The transformation takes just five seconds!

There are two lowered silvered sub-dials on the face. Once the wearer pulls the slide a change occurs on the face. The center of the dial remains the same but the changes actually happen at top and bottom of the dial where the appearance of the sub-counters is completely changed. It is an enormously complex module built on the MB 67.40 chronograph movement. 494 movement’s constituent parts of 746 are for the transforming mechanism.

Crafted entirely by hand, Metamorphosis II is pure piece of art. The watch has a 52 mm round case which is compensated with a curved profile. The Metamorphosis II is priced at 404,800 Singapore dollars, equivalent to US$317,000.

Lamborghini Asterion LPI 910-4

Lamborghini Asterion LPI 910-4 Concept Launched

Last week, Lamborghini introduced their newest hybrid super car called Asterion LPI 910-4. They named it after a Greek mythological creature, the “LP” stands for “longitudinal posterior,” while the “910-4″ refers to its combined horsepower and all-wheel-drive train.

The Asterion LPI 910-4 starts with a 5.2-liter, naturally aspirated V-10 engine that outputs a stated 610-horsepower and 413 pound-feet of torque and adds a trio of electric motors. Total power when all of the electric motors and the V-10 are working in concert is stated at 910 horsepower. The Asterion LPI 910-4 can reach 62 mph in three seconds flat and a top speed of 199 miles per hour. But it can also drive on electric power alone –for 50km anyway and at speeds of up to 125km/h.

“Lamborghini continues to focus on weight reduction as a means to reducing CO2, for example through the investment in carbon fiber engineering, which also contributes to our quest for the best super sports car handling and performance.”

“To significantly reduce emissions on a car in this moment however, plug-in electrification is the best option for us, because for Lamborghini such a car must still provide a truly emotional driving experience,” said Stephan Winkelmann, President and CEO of Automobili Lamborghini.

The design of the car is very powerful and its curved nose evokes memories of the Miura and 400GT.

Zaha Hadid has unveiled her latest design for a series of riverside towers in Brisbane, Australia. The Pritzker Prize winner’s proposal comprises three magnificent towers. “Our vision is to create a vibrant urban village which sensitively activates its urban and riverfront context through compelling architecture and landscape design,” said Sunland Managing Director, Sahba Abedian.

McLaren 625C

McLaren 625C

McLaren introduced its first regionally tailored model exclusively for the Asian market. The 625C ( ‘C’ standing for ‘Club’ ) is a slightly less powerful version of the 650S set to be offered in both coupe and spider versions.

The 625C is powered by McLaren’s familiar 3.8-litre twin-turbocharged V8 engine outputting 625 HP (460 kW) at 7,250 rpm and 610 Nm (450 lb-ft) of torque between 3,000 and 7,000 rpm. The company says it has “an increased focus on day-to-day usability and comfort”. The 625C is equipped with new dampers and a revised suspension setup (including softer spring rates at the rear). There are also new brakes, which are cast-iron discs instead of the carbon fiber-ceramic units found on the 650S.

The car looks pretty much the same as its powerful predecessor 650S. The front end is inspired by McLaren’s new hybrid supercar. McLaren 625C will hit 62mph in 3.1 seconds that’s 0.1 of a second slower than a 650S, while the top speed remains the same at 207mph.

Both coupe and spider versions of the 625C will go on sale, and the model will initially launch in Hong Kong, and other countries in the Asia Pacific region will get the cars in the following months.
