Top Luxury Cars at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit

The Consumer Electronics Show (CES) turned some heads when it was held in Detroit, earlier this year. Arguably still the most important auto show in the U.S, there were plenty of debuts from renowned automakers Audi, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, and others—particularly in the ultra-hot crossover and SUV segments.

Mercedes debuted its Mercedes-AMG GT C Coupe in celebration of AMG’s 50th anniversary. Positioned performance-wise between the AMG GT S and the line-topping AMG GT R unveiled in Paris last year, the fixed-roof version of the AMG GT C has a 4-liter engine capable of producing 550 hp and 503 ft lbs of torque. The car can go from zero to 60 mph in 3.6 seconds and will launch in a special “Edition 50” trim, with Graphite Gray Magno paint, black chrome exterior trim, and a matching black-and-silver interior color scheme. Price is yet to be announced but is expected to be in the $150,000 neighbourhood.

Audi is following in the footsteps of BMW and Mercedez-Benz with its new Q8 Concept. The coupe-like SUV vehicle resembles its successor Q7, but has a sharper sloping roofline and an aggressive front grille with vertical bars reminiscent. Its flat, wedge-shaped headlamps use innovative digital Matrix laser lights, which illuminate the road better than LED lights. The Q8 can comfortably accommodate four passengers and has Audi’s signature “virtual cockpit” technology, which combines a head-up display with high-resolution touchscreens. The 3-liter V-6 combustion engine is capable of producing 550 hp.as the car is put into production its price is estimated to be around £70,000.

BMW has been making headlines with the M550i xDrive and 530e iPerformance, which made its debut in three versions. BMW’s redesigned 5 Series sedan starts at $73,095 and is currently the top-of-the-line 5 Series model.  It is capable of accelerating from 0 to 60 mph in 3.9 seconds. The 530e iPerformance plug-in hybrid (starting from $52,395) pairs an electric motor with BMW’s 2.0-liter, turbocharged 4-cylinder combustion engine and rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive.

aero-gt

The AeroGT- a 190 MPH Concept Car

Bell & Ross’s Bruno Belamich introduces head-turning utilitarian design from elements of fantasy in the light of New Year. The AeroGT concept car is no ordinary vehicle. With its ultra-low 43-inch profile, the carbon-fiber sports car is projected to cruise at 190 mph and combine futuristic design and uncompromising performance. The model is also unconventional in another aspect: created by a watch designer – it will serve as an inspiration for a couple of new timepieces.

Bruno Belamich has a strong background in horology and his initiation into automobile making marks the beginning of a daring new venture. His brand, Bell & Ross has always had a connection to high-speed vehicles – having collaborate with Sinn Uhren—a German manufacturer specializing in chronographs for pilots. The Aero GT, will be a sharkfin-style V8 “designed to hold its own amongst automotive professionals”. The 4.7m long car will weight 1,320kg and pack a 4.2l V8 engine with 610 horsepower.

Of course, the project is still in its initial stages and can undergo a lot of modifications before seeing the light of day but for the time being – it has more than a hint of aviation in its inception: the car features a number of stylistic elements derived from fast jets, including aerodynamic “canard”-style wing mirrors, a vertical tail fin and – within the cabin – a “pitot tube”, used in aviation to measure high speeds. Belamich himself describes the car as “an amalgamation of an aircraft and a GT”, which is sure to interest wealthy buyers as a first.

NextEV NIO EP901

The NextEV NIO EP9 – the supercar of the future

NextEV is not a company that people seem to be particularly familiar with, unless they have been monitoring the nascent Formula E racing series, but this is bound to change. In the automotive world the brand is synonymous with fast technology and uncompromising performance. And the newest NIO EP9 model will skyrocket the company in the ranks of super brands like Ferrari, Lamborghini and Bugatti.

Unveiled earlier in London, only six NIO EP9s are planned, so only a handful of selected buyers will be able to get their hands on this new supercar. Capable of accelerating from 0-100km/h in 2.7 seconds and from 0-200km/h in 7.1 seconds before topping out at 313km/h, the NIO EP9 is a statement of innovative vision and technical and manufacturing prowess.

NextEV NIO EP902

Four inbound electric motors and a battery pack that requires water-cooling make the EP9 an all-wheel drive, with a combined output of 1340bhp and a range of 427km (265 miles) before the batteries are spent. They can be recharged in just 45 minutes or even swapped out for replacement units in a matter of minutes.

NextEV NIO EP903

NextEV isn’t the only company developing plug-in electric supercars but it is the first one to introduce them into the luxury car segment. The EP9 has lapped the Nürburgring Nordschliefe in seven minutes, 5.12 seconds, earning it the title of the fastest road-legal electric car in the world. Therefore the car should be seen as a statement of intent that showcases what is possible with electric vehicles.

The EP9 will enter production next year by a mass-production electric car that will initially go on sale in China but will be rolled out globally.

Jaguar XKSS

A reborn legend – the £1million Jaguar XKSS

Car enthusiasts are thrilled with Jaguar’s announcement of manufacturing the nine ‘lost’ XKSS supercars, which were destroyed in fire at Browns Lane factory in Coventry in 1957. Considered to be lost forever, the legendary model will recreate the original XKSS owned by stars including Steve McQueen after Jaguar found the blueprints. Willing buyers who are ready to pay £1m will be able to grab one as early as 2017, which is considerably cheaper than an original at £10m.

Each car roughly takes craftsmen about 10,000 man hours to complete and includes 2,000 rivets. All measurements are in traditional imperial rather than metric form. Originally created as a road-going conversion of the Le Mans-winning D-type racing car, the new vehicle has a streamlined exterior with each of the nine cars sporting period chassis numbers from the original XKSS chassis log.

Jaguar XKSS03

The car accelerates from 0 to 60mph in just 5.5 seconds and to 100mph in 13.5 seconds thanks to a 3.4 litre XK straight six engine and helped by its lightweight aluminium body.  What is most striking about the XKSS is that despite advances in technology, aerodynamics and car manufacture – Jaguar engineers have not employed any of these to tweak it, keeping instead the feel and performance as authentic as possible.

The new supercar has been 60 years in the making and is a delightful nod to a simpler time. Drivers will be able to enjoy not only its vintage look but vintage features as well, which are part of the attempt to recreate the original experience.
