LONDON'S ICONIC GHERKIN SKYSCRAPER IS PUT UP FOR SALE

London’s iconic Gherkin skyscraper is put up for sale

One of London’s most recognisable buildings, the Gherkin skyscraper, has been put up for sale with a price tag of about £650 million.

The 40-storey skyscraper, officially called 30 St Mary Axe, was designed by Lord Foster of the Foster and Partners architectural firm, and opened in the City of London in 2004. The landmark office building is expected to attract interest from around the world.

The Gherkin was bought from Swiss Re in 2006 for £600 million by London based investment bank Evans Randall and German real estate group IVG Immobilien. Administrators Deloitte have appointed estate agents Savills and deloitte Real estate to sell the building.

The 180-meter (590-foot) tower is recognised as one of the more distinctive skyscrapers in the financial district of London. The Foster and Partners firm has worked on such renowned buildings as the renovated Reichstag in Berlin, London City Hall, and Wembley Stadium. The Gherkin is covered uniformly around the outside with glass panels and is rounded off at the corners. Open shafts were built in between each floor that act as ventilation for the building and they require no energy for use. These open shafts allow available sunlight to penetrate deep into the building to cut down on light cost. It houses about 20 firms, including reinsurer Swiss Re, Standard Life and the City studios for Sky News.

“This is a prestigious appointment on what is a globally recognised landmark building, which sits in the heart of London’s business core. The Central London commercial property market has benefited from improving market conditions over the course of the last few years,” said Stephen Down, head of central London investment at Savills.

MICHAEL JACKSON'S NEVERLAND RANCH

Michael jackson’s neverland ranch will be put on the market

King of Pop, Michael Jackson, transformed the face of pop music and popular culture. His Neverland ranch in California will soon be put on the market.

The property is currently managed by Colony Capital firm, which took over Neverland’s estimated $23 million debt from Jackson himself in late 2007. Thomas Barrack Jr of Colony Capital said: “We’ve really just been custodians of an irreplaceable estate and are proud to say we’ve restored it to the original elegance Michael first envisioned. We are now considering putting it up for sale.”

Neverland, named by Jackson after the island in J.M. Barrie’s story of Peter Pan, a boy who never grows up, featured a private amusement park and zoo on its grounds. Luxury property prices have been soaring recently in California and experts said Neverland could fetch up to $60 million. The 2,680-acre (1,085-hectare) property is in the Santa Ynez Valley, a region known for wineries where the 2004 film “Sideways” was set.

Jackson acquired the ranch from golf-course entrepreneur William Bone in 1988. Neverland has 22 buildings, including a mansion, guesthouses and several apartments. There’s also an amusement park with a roller coaster and Ferris wheel, a railroad, a movie theater, a deluxe French-style country home, two railroads and numerous water fountains. But with most of the amusement park rides dismantled and Jackson’s personal effects sold at auction years ago.

Officials with the Jackson estate issued a statement: “We hope and trust that any new owners of Neverland will respect the historical importance and special nature of this wonderful property. Michael’s memory lives on in the hearts of his fans worldwide.”
