The Gate – London’s newest vegetarian restaurant

Vegetarian restaurants are often not given the credit they deserve in the culinary world. Luckily, this is about to change with the Gate – London’s newest venue, where people can enjoy a savoury meal and bustling atmosphere. All, at a hefty price, of course.

The interior is airy and casual, which works surprisingly well for this type of venue.  The high-ceilinged room with low-hanging filament lighting over the tables and bar creates an intimate and social atmosphere, where clients feel welcomed. Service is fast, friendly and knowledgeable of all the items on and off the menu, which is a combination we rarely see in trendy restaurants these days.

TheGateVegetarianRestaurant-London03

One thing that stands out in the Gate is their choice of wine selection, which is unusual and very experimental. The wines and beers on offer are organic and bustling with flavour, sourced from local and globally-renowned wineries and breweries, providing a complementing finish to the eating experience.

The flavour in the menu is a result from the Middle Eastern heritage of The Gate’s founders, brothers Michael and Adrian Daniel, whose Indo-Iraqi lineage results in a tantalising array of dishes.  The starters include a savoury selection of delicacies, such as miso glazed aubergine with crushed cashews, coriander and a ponzu sauce and rich buffalo mozzarella with grilled courgettes, marjoram oil and candied lemon. Grilled halloumi in chermula is another popular choice to start off your meal.

TheGateVegetarianRestaurant-London04

Moving on to the main course- there are plenty of options for people who don’t shy away from trying new things. The aubergine schnitzels sit atop roasted red peppers, plum tomatoes and dauphinoise potatoes and create a surprisingly balanced dish of complementing tastes and textures.

The dessert menu has plenty of vegetarian options of popular delicacies, such as crème brûlée and vegan vanilla cheesecake.  It provides a sumptuous end to a lovely meal.
