2017 welcomes one of BMW’s hottest offers in three decades – the midsize 5 Series sedan. The initial M5 made 280 hp from a 3.5-liter inline 6-cylinder engine. Fewer than 2,200 examples were produced, making it one of the rarest production cars in BMW’s portfolio.
Five generations later, the brand has fitted a powerful V-8 engine under the hood of the newest BMW 5 Series. In addition, it has equipped it with a sport suspension, bigger brakes, and all-wheel-drive, and aptly named its creation the M550i. The end result is the quickest and most powerful 5 Series to date. It is capable of 456 hp and does the zero-to-60 mph dash in less than 4 seconds—faster than the outgoing M5.
This is the perfect business car capable of a sporty performance. Comparable to the Mercedes-AMG 43 lineup and Audi’s S line, M Performance highlights the difference between the standard series cars and official M cars.
The M550i is 10 mm lower than the standard 5 Series and, comes standard with an adaptive sport suspension, customizable settings for steering, throttle response, and shift points. It achieves a perfect balance between comfort and performance. Drivers are able to choose between various driving modes, giving the car full control on urban highways and mountain roads alike. Minor exterior changes distinguish the M550i from the standard series cars. These include an aero kit with rear spoiler and a grey metallic trim on the front grille, exterior mirror caps, and side air breathers. Buyers can opt for 20-inch wheels painted in a matching matte grey finish. Inside, the M550i is fitted with leather sport seats, a thick M sport steering wheel, and a unique instrument cluster. BMW’s usual navigation and connectivity functions are also present. Prices for the model start at $73,095.
